Not
many people find the prospect of negotiation an exciting endeavor, in fact, most people anticipate it with dread.
Negotiation can be compared to mediation and is akin to arbitration. Negotiation can take many forms from
above-board, straight-forward to cherry picking and salami tactics. There are many forms of negotiation such as accomodating,
avoiding, collaborating, competing and compromising.
The
solution to almost every problem in life lies in questions. Questions that dig deeper and deeper into a situation will
eventually reveal answers. The Power of positive confrontation lies first in finding out exactly what the problem is.
Many times, the words coming out of the other person’s mouth are not the actual problem at all; they are a group of
colorful symptoms. The POWER of positive confrontation lies in your ability to not only find out what the problem is,
but to allow the other person room to vent their frustration while you calmly keep driving deeper to the root of the problem.
Any time you meet someone else’s frustration with frustration of your own, you lose all power of the situation.
You will not be able to speak politely and powerfully. Hence, the POWER of positive confrontation lies in your ability
see past the superficial antics to a deeper level of need.
