Four Basics...
Although beauty pageants are very multifaceted, there are four basic categories that a contestant must master in order to even be in the running!  Those four basics are:  Modeling, Interview, Talent and Attire.  If any one of these are weak, it will tremendously reduce the score.  Having competed, and also having judged local and state pageants from Boston to Florida, I have a comprehensive understanding of the qualities that make a difference.  Those qualities are universal and change only slightly over time.  With more contemporary pageant systems, just as in almost any other area of life, fads come and go; but in the solid basic pageants with quality judges, beauty is beauty...whether it is modeling beauty, speaking beauty, talent beauty or clothing beauty!  Stick with the basics.  They will render you success, and maybe even cash or scholarships!     ~Rita

Modeling:
There is quite a difference in pageant modeling and runway modeling.  There is a basic footwork in pageant modeling that is not confusing and is simple to learn.  Shoulders, hands, breast bone, and foot placement can create an air of elegance or farm life!  The timing of the head turn even matters!  After learning modeling for a pageant, you are so much more confident in everyday life!  You don't feel like that bull in a china shop I spoke of in my Personal Development link!     ~Rita

Interview:

The goal of a beauty pageant is not to simply see who is the most beautiful physically, but rather to see who will represent the title in the most beautiful, complete package.  We ladies in the south have a fascinating accent to those who are not from the south, but many pageants do not want a winner who has a heavy southern drawl, especially if the pageant system is a national system.  They also want a winner who is somewhat familiar with current events, local happenings and even some history.  I have over 500 interview questions that have been used in actual pageants.  We will not only work on the way you answer the questions, but also on the content of your answers.  If you don't leave the interview as a knowledgeable breath of fresh air to the judges, they probably won't remember you!     ~Rita

About to enter a pageant??
Don't be fooled!
Expertise does matter!

Talent:
Most pageant systems do include Talent.  The talent you choose is important, but not nearly as important as your execution of it.  I have told my students for years that you can find many people who can sing a beautiful song, but they are few and far between who can reach in and squeeze your heart for three minutes and leave you feeling as if you have just visited another place!  That's what talent is all about!!  I have attended many pageants where I knew that the judges had very little musical ability or understanding.  Guess how they chose the talent winner?  That's right!...the one who impressed them the most!     ~Rita

Attire:
Clothes do matter!  It matters how they hang on your body.  It matters how well the color compliments your features.  It matters how they move when you walk.  It matters where they pull when you sit.  It matters if your clothes are an extension of you!  It matters!

What many call talent is nothing more than doing continuous hard work in the right way!
